Hurrah! The sun is out - get your bike out!

Pop in to buy helmets! bikes! Locks! Tyres! We are taking bookings online for all servicing, and open as per usual. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Well, the sun is out so we’re busy again! (Not that we ever weren’t) we’ve got extra capacity in our workshop now, so waiting times aren’t too bad, and we’ve got plenty of stock of parts.  You can make a booking for a bike service or repair, the online booking system works really well, we promise! We are also now doing bike fits every Saturday and Monday. These are still going, and bike fits in our London shop can be booked here.

We do try and save some time for simple walk-in repairs every day, so if that’s the case, just pop in and we will see if we can help. Punctures do not need an appointment. £20 for a puncture repair including new tube, or £15 if you just bring us the wheel and not the bike. All done while you wait.

Bicycle repairs and services and cycling accessories for sale – all from friendly experts in Crouch End’s newest (and oldest) bike shop!

As an “essential business” we are very much open as usual during lockdown, Tuesday to Saturday. We will usually fix punctures repairs while you wait (no appointment or phone call necessary), and you can pop in any time during opening hours to buy locks, lights, helmets, mudguards, tyres, inner tubes, panniers and many other bike and cycling supplies.

For bike services or other repairs, please book online or come in to discuss what is needed. For other queries, we would prefer an email or WhatsApp message over a phone call – to allow us to concentrate on fixing bikes during the day! We will reply promptly.

We appreciate your understanding and support and look forward to getting you out pedalling!

Bike Servicing

Keep your bike in tip-top shape. A service is recommended once every six months to a year, but if it's been longer than that, don't worry, we specialise in bringing old bikes back to life! A main service is just £75.

Bicycle Repairs

We have a fully kitted-out workshop and all the experience to repair your bike in Crouch End. Simple repairs start from £10 and we have plenty of stock of cassettes, chains, tyres, brake pads and other parts.

Parts and Accessories

Who wants to get on the bus? Not us. We've got panniers, front baskets, helmets, lights, locks, tools, pumps, gloves, socks, cleaning gear and all sorts of other goodies to help with your commute or riding for fun.

About us

Bike repairs, bike servicing and lots of cycling accessories for sale - all from friendly experts in Crouch End’s newest (and oldest) bike shop!

Cycling is a great way to exercise, commute and explore the city and countryside, while keeping a safe physical distance during the Covid-19 pandemic. We’ve seen a huge rise in demand as people try to get around London, and (re-)discovering the joys of two wheels in the process.

We’re friendly, bike-loving expert bike mechanics, eager to get the people of Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Hornsey, Haringey and all around North London out cycling as quickly, safely and enjoyably as possible from our central Crouch End bike shop, Butternut Bikes.

Whether you’re looking to service and revive an old bike, assemble or check a new bike, mend brakes, gears or punctures or are in need of tips to become a more confident cyclist – we are here to help.

We are currently taking booking for servicing at least a week in advance, but always try and keep some space free for punctures, emergencies and advice. Otherwise, the best way to book a service or bigger repair is through our online system. But if you are unsure, you can pop in during opening hours or send an email or WhatsApp

We also have a growing stock of accessories for sale – adult and kid helmets, water bottles, bike cleaning gear, mudguards, baskets, socks, gloves, base layers, tyres, inner tubes, wheels, panniers, pannier racks, locks, lights and much more.

Our Services

Good value, friendly service without the bike shop sarcasm or judgment. Never be afraid to come and see us or ask a question! People of all shapes, sizes, genders and all types of bikes are welcome. (and dogs too)

Bike Service - £75

Our full bike service costs £75 and includes a thorough cleaning and work on the gears, brakes, all other major moving parts, etc. Many other shops have this priced as a “premium” service. The cost of any new parts will be added on, including chains, cassettes, cables and brake pads (from £5).

Bicycle Fixing

Repairs range from £10 to fix brakes or gears. If your bike requires more or less repairing, we will tell you when we assess it and provide a quote before we start the work. We understand that everyone has a budget to work to. If you don't have an appointment, just pop by and we'll try to help

Punctures, Flat Tyres and Inner Tubes

Flat tyre? No problem. Just pop into the shop and we will fix your flat tyre for just £10 plus inner tube. No need to call ahead or book. We also have new tyres and inner tubes if you need them.

Cycling Collective

Join the Butternut Cycling Collective to make friends and join group rides! All levels and types of bikes are welcome, the point is to have fun, get out cycling and share tips and routes. Follow us on Instagram @ButternutBikesCC or drop us a line for the WhatsApp group link.

Repair Bookings

You can book online for your repairs now, and that's the best way to do it. We don't go ahead with any repairs before talking to you, but if you want an idea of what needs doing, just come down with your bike any time and we'll give you a quote.

New Bike Assembly - £45

We’ll check over brand new bikes with snagging issues (a common problem with bikes bought from large retailers or online) and show you some hints and tips. A really worthwhile thing to do when you've got a new bike.

Why Choose Us

Because we love cycling and are determined to help people of all ages, experience and fitness levels learn to love it too. Between us we own an average of six bikes per person (!) and are happy riding and repairing nearly every type of bike.

Expert mechanics

Our shared passion for bikes is what got us into this lucky position of opening Crouch End’s first bike repair shop in a year. With our vast and varied background, with experience in high street and independent bike shops, bike companies and cycling advocacy, and will work hard to get you out reaping the many benefits of cycling as quickly, safely and enjoyably as possible.

Great value

As a new and independent bike shop opening during the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, we are working hard to secure spare parts, accessories and other necessities and quickly as possible - even with widespread delays and shortages. We intend to keep our prices fair and competitive, while staying true to our mission to ensure every bike we fix rolls out the doors safely, comfortably and smoothly.

Founded in a pub during the pandemic

We started as mobile bike mechanics roaming Hornsey and Crouch End during the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, and found our first home in Crouch End's lovely Railway Tavern pub. Within weeks, and with much love for the Railway Tavern and our customers, we moved into our Crouch Hill shop.

Fast service

Our aim is always to get bikes repaired and back to you the same day. It's not always possible depending on what parts are needed, but we try!

It’s good to see an independent LBS in Crouch End. Have used these guys a few times now. They’re friendly, responsive, helpful and have done a good job on both my bikes. It can’t be easy starting a LBS right now, especially with a messed up bike industry supply chain, but they are off to a good start. The business is going from strength to strength – despite supply chain issues they are carrying more parts and have better supplier access; they’re establishing a strong presence locally with organised rides and more visible branding and presence; web-booking is up and running etc. They have the high class problem of being busy, maybe more busy than they are comfortable with. That means Gav & team have to make choices and can’t always drop everything at the drop of a hat for that unexpected request. But that’s fine and that’s fair. I’d rather have an LBS that cares about what they do and the service/standards they offer than a soul-less chain with no customer passion. Go try them. Support themread more

I have been here a few times, both for a service and to buy parts. Bike always comes out great and the shop is well stocked. Always honest and upfront too, which is greatly appreciated.I’d recommend going “off peak” for any questions or while you wait jobs. No queue and I’ve found it to be more relaxed than when the shops busy.read more

My bicycle entered in a poorly state and within 4 days was in my hands again. It positively hums along now. They obviously are very clued up as they noticed a lethal fault within a minute of inspection. I certainly felt confident in their skill. The shop appears to be small but don’t let that put you off. They work hard to put things right. I understand they’ve added yet another engineer to the team just now (March 2021).read more

I find the owner, Gavin, abrupt to say the least (some might say “rude”). OK perhaps he was having a bad day, but it has happened more than once…….but I’m also not a fan of their rather “approximate” way of doing things. Most recently, I wanted a bike rack. Delightful young lady recommended one to me. I asked if she was sure it would fit because the points of attachment on my bike (as I showed her) are unusually low down. Gavin (working in the back) chips in. He seemed annoyed that I should even query: “trust me, it’ll fit!!!”. OK, you’re an experienced professional, I’m an irritating amateur. All smiles. Young lady asks my email address to send me a receipt (no paper receipts. Great, how green!). That means I have to write it on a piece of paper (OK, not so green…) I write it, make sure it’s clear, and leave. A week later I try to fit the rack. Takes me at least 30 mins. Guess what. It doesn’t fit for exactly the reason I said it might not! Will now have to take it back to the “experts”. Where’s the receipt? Oh it’s on email my computer, silly me! …Search my inbox…No…in my Spam? Er no, it’s not there either. Delightful young lady must have typed it in wrong so I have no receipt….will take it back anyway. Hope Gavin’s had a better night’s sleep this time….read more

This bicycle shop is the best and most helpful. I have been here a few times and the advice and service they have given has been A*. I’ve had 2 bicycles stolen in a space of a year and a half. The team at butternut bikes gave me a step by step tutorial of how to ensure my bicycle is secure and safe, I was able to ask questions and not made to feel daft. Definitely one of the best bicycle shops I have been too, they really go that extra mile, which is lovely. Thank you so much for your helpread more

Me and my wife had a great experience at BB. We try to support as many local businesses as possible and even more so during this time. From start to present a very professional, friendly service that comes with all the bells and whistles. We bought two bikes and a bunch of other stuff. These guys know their stuff and don’t overcharge like other companies do. They even threw in some T-shirt’s and added extras for us.We went back to check a squeaky break on one of the bikes as my wife has been riding 26 miles a day and they fixed it no problem for us.Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these guys to anyone. Thank you for a 5 star service! Keep doing what you’re doing, we need more guys like this in independents.read more
