New Tern GSD Generation 3: What’s Coming and Should You Wait?

Tern has been teasing something big for March 25th, and while they haven’t confirmed what it is, all signs point to a new generation of the GSD cargo bike. As London’s favourite Tern specialists here at Butternut Bikes, we’ve seen a lot of excitement and speculation about what this means. Here’s our pure speculative (as of Wednesday 19th March 2025) take on what to expect—and whether you should hold off on buying a GSD right now.

The longtail market is quite crowded – and, to be honest, quite good. There are a number of really capable longtail bikes (Including the ones we sell from Estarli, Veloe, Bicicapace and Bike43). When anyone asks, “What is the best bike to carry two kids on?” we always honestly answer “The Tern GSD”, and it’s only right that progressive companies like Tern keep moving forwards and developing that.

What Might Change? (And What Probably Won’t)

Let’s get one thing straight: the Tern GSD is already a cracking cargo bike, and we’re not expecting an earth-shattering redesign. Think of this like the iPhone model cycle—refinements, upgrades, and some smart new features, but not a complete overhaul. Based on what we know about Tern and the industry, here’s what we think is coming:

  1. Bosch Smart System Integration – The new gen 3 GSD will almost certainly have the Bosch Smart System as an option. This means connected features like GPS tracking, eBike Alarm, and remote locking via your phone. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t make the bike feel any more powerful—it’s about security and integration, not extra torque or range.

  2. Subtle Frame Refinements & Higher Weight Limits – If history tells us anything, the Gen 3 GSD will look a lot like its predecessors. The GSD Gen 1 and Gen 2 were visually similar (apart from the suspension fork), so expect the same core frame with minor refinements. A higher weight limit and the possible inclusion of ABS could be the big changes here.

  3. Drivetrain Tweaks – It’s likely the new GSD will launch with derailleur-based drivetrains, and a potential for hub gear (similar to the current model, but perhaps some different options?) The suspension fork might see a slight upgrade, but we’re not expecting a radical shift to an air fork.

  4. Cargo & Accessory Compatibility – Tern has a great track record of keeping accessories compatible across generations. We expect the new model to work with existing setups while likely adopting the Stow Decks as standard.

  5. Price Increase – This one’s almost certain. Given the way bike prices have been trending, we’re expecting the Gen 3 GSD to be about £1,000 more than the current model, likely starting at around £5,900.

Should You Wait for the New One?

Honestly? Probably not.

Here’s why: the GSD Gen 3 is likely to be an evolution, not a revolution. If you need a cargo bike now, the current GSD is still one of the best bikes on the market. It will likely remain available at a lower price—just like how Apple continues selling previous iPhone models when a new one launches. If you wait six months for the Gen 3, you’ll be spending more money for features that, while nice, may not fundamentally change your riding experience.

If you’re hoping to have a cargo bike ready for summer adventures, school runs, and grocery hauls, grab a current GSD while you can. If you wait, you’ll be missing out on six months of fun riding time with your quickly growing kids! Those school runs and weekend rides won’t wait for the latest tech.

That said, we could also be completely wrong! Tern might be launching an entirely different bike—or even multiple new models. If previous product cycles hold, we expect the new model to start shipping around September, and we’ll be taking pre-orders from the announcement date.

Whatever the new bike is, one thing is certain: Tern will have tested it to the highest standard. They use EFBE’s Tri-Test, which is based on DIN 79010, ensuring their bikes meet rigorous safety and durability benchmarks, the same can’t be said of most other bike manufacturers, and this commitment to safety and the longevity of their bikes is what makes us enjoy selling Tern Bikes so much.
